2017 SANDAHL 'BALL OF FAME'
(rhine) riesling, genesis vineyard, rare peak grade, badacsony, hungary.

Label

The theme for 2017 was magic. It is the third year in a row we produce very high quality and the feeling begin to get magic. This wine is the best of the four we made from this vintage. The ball named SANDAHL has been used in past promotions, and now reappear for a magician to master.

Origin

When harvest time did approach, Villa Sandahl staff had not realized how much sugar the grapes had collected, and the first measurement signaled panic to harvest. The grapes to this wine were harvested as specified below, and depending on complementing characters the wine fractions were assembled as also marked below.

2017-10-07   Harvesting Genesis high and Genesis high grafts
2017-10-08   Harvesting Genesis high and Genesis high grafts
2017-10-08 1st fraction Pressing above Genesis high and Genesis high grafts

The grapes had almost no gray rot or botrytis. Our final portfolio of four 2017 wines was assembled in April 2018.

Tastings

By Christer Sandahl.

  Date 2019-01-04
  Color Pale yellow
Smell Fantastic silky character, big in the nose, a bit fury but not alcoholic
Taste Despite the alcohol level, it is very balanced
Judgment Very well-made wine. Half year after bottling in January 2019, the wine is surprisingly open to be our highest quality, which normally use to be closed and shy at this point of time

By Christer Sandahl.

  Date 2019-07-20 during summer
Color Still pale yellow, even with a green tint.
Smell Shy smell, compact Riesling character, some herbs, some mineral, but a shy monster.
Taste Coating the palate, apart from the alcohol it still tastes like the newly pressed juice, raw Riesling with turpentine and cellulose, quite sexy for a wine maker.
Judgment It will be exciting to follow this beautiful monster to mature in the future. At the least it will be a fantastic wine.

  Date 2020-07-13 during summer
Color Medium yellow, now without the green tint.
Smell Compact Riesling character, with a grassy hint, some mineral, easy and straight forward
Taste Big wine on the palate, now more grown up and available to drink. This wine has gradually became elegant and stylish
Judgment It is surely on the wine to get a fantastic wine. 96 Points out of 100.

Date 2021-04-14, ahead of spring season.
  Color Medium to full yellow
Smell Surprisingly well developed (even with our own standard), clean, open, nice, well-made, refreshing, all such attractive characteristics.
Taste Lovely taste, forward as always, but now in a grown-up way, straight and refreshing as the smell.
Judgment Faster than we believed, it has now reached predicted 96 Points out of 100, and should stay there for several years to come.

OBSERVE:

Ball of fame is of rare peak grade, but this is not indicated by the cork capsule.
