(rhine) riesling, mid range plain grade, badacsony, hungary.

From the 2018 vintage we have improved our market communication. One improvement is that we have divided our wine portfolio into three grades, informing to which quality level the wine belongs. The three levels are 'Rare peak', 'Mid range', and 'Solid ground' and these three grades are indicated by the back label and by different capsules.

This wine named 'Buy the way' belongs to the 'Mid range' grade, which is our middle grade (between 'Solid ground' and 'Rare peak'). 'Mid range plain' means that it is the ordinary one of our two 'Mid range' wines.

The theme for 2018 vintage was to identify a traffic sign useful in the illustration of the 'Mid range' grade, in this case a sign proposing to pay toll or buy the road along the mid range mountains. 'Mid range' bottles are sealed with a nature cork covered with a black capsule with the Sandahl text in white, see the picture to the right.

The 2018 autumn brought heavy rains between the 1st and 7th of September, causing some rot in lower parts of our vineyards, which didn't perfectly develop to botrytis. Then the autumn proceed like a farmers dream. There was an almost rain free sunny month from the 29th of September to the 27th of October.

We had three distinct harvest periods:
1. 'Normal harvest' period the 18th of September
2. 'Late harvest' period the 4th and 5th of October
3. 'Ultra late harvest' period the 15th and 17th of October

2018-09-18 Harvest of Genesis low in normal harvest period
2018-10-18 Use of 2nd fraction from pressing above harvest
2018-10-05 Bishop backyard west and Solitude in late harvesting period
2018-10-06 Use of 2nd fraction from pressing above harvest

Some of the grapes in Genesis low had gray rot, but we applied a strict selection at harvest.

  Color Light yellow color.
Smell Like many Mid range wines, this will gain from some bottle age. Stylish and classic smell, fresh and clean.
Taste Available in the taste, minerally, well balanced, round fresh acidity, a taste in the classic Riesling way. A long after taste, with a hint of botrytis.
Judgment Can be used now to accompany food. Can with advantage be saved a year to be enjoyed by itself. For the moment worth 92 points out of 100. In some years, can climb to 94 points.

  Color Medium yellow color.
Smell Spicy smell, like the Swedish soda "Champis", herbaceous and special.
Taste The taste is better than the smell, not at all so odd. A bit meager.
Judgment Among the 13 wines from 2017 to 2019, it is not surprising that one or two doesn't live up to our expectations. This is not a bad wine, but has turned out more Solid ground than Mid range. We will price it consequently. At 88 points for the moment, but we cross our fingers it will reach the 90s.
