2018 SANDAHL 'OH DEER'
(rhine) riesling, ultra late harvest, rare peak grade, badacsony, hungary.

Labels

From the 2018 vintage we have improved our market communication. One improvement is that we have divided our wine portfolio into three grades, informing to which quality level the wine belongs. The three levels are 'Rare peak', 'Mid range', and 'Solid ground' and these three grades are indicated by the back label and by different capsules.

This wine named 'Oh deer' belongs to the 'Rare peak' grade, which is our top grade (above the 'mid range' grade).

The theme for 2018 vintage was to identify traffic signs useful in the illustration of the 'Rare peak' grade, in this case a sign at the foot of the 'Rare peak', warning for falling rocks, including one and another deer. 'Rare peak' bottles are sealed with a premium nature cork covered with a black capsule with the Sandahl text in gold, see the picture to the right.

Weather

The 2018 autumn brought heavy rains between the 1st and 7th of September, causing some rot in lower parts of our vineyards, which didn't perfectly develop to botrytis. Then the autumn proceed like a farmers dream. There was an almost rain free sunny month from the 29th of September to the 27th of October.

We had three distinct harvest periods:
1. 'Normal harvest' period the 18th of September
2. 'Late harvest' period the 4th and 5th of October
3. 'Ultra late harvest' period the 15th and 17th of October

Tastings

  Date 2019-09-23
  Color Lovely lemon pale color
Smell Floral, white flowers giving an impression of spring morning to summer.
Taste Finely textured palate, the aggressively of Riesling tempered by natural ripeness and lowish (for Riesling) acidity
Judgment A wine of class and charm, beautifully made, expressive with vineyard purity; expected sweetness and concentration from the ultra late harvest, but while natural concentration is there, there is only a touch of residual sugar that prolongs the flavor. This is a very good wine.

  Color Light yellow.
Smell Soft and attractive, a hint of white peeper give a nice clogged feeling in the nose. Silky and velvety.
Taste Powerful but gentle in the mouth, oily and rich, style similar to our entry wine 2018 'Dig it' but much richer, and will improve much more with bottle development.
Judgment Despite good concentration and structure, it is an elegant and soft wine, the typical Sandahl hallmark. Already now we recognize this wine to be among our best so far.

  Color Medium yellow.
Smell Flowery lemon, lily of the valley, sweet and soft, in combo with minerally and classic tones. Pure and delicious.
Taste Young and undeveloped, thick dried fruit, compact and cohesive, with perfect balance, also in the long after taste.
Judgment No rush to consume, no need to thoroughly refrigerate. In some years, this wine will open up beautifully.

  Color Medium yellow.
Smell Still a bit restrained, but dynamic and friendly, thick fruit, sweet and soft in combo. Pure and delicious.
Taste Coldish and cool. High sharp focus. Fruit like pineapples. Still young and undeveloped, long after taste.
Judgment This wine is still on the way to open up beautifully. It has for long been my and my wifes favorite, only recently surpassed by 2019 Birdie Num Num and maybe 2019 Brave Birds. This wine was awarded the second price by VinCEs volcano contest. At 95 points today, but will climb to at least 97 points when at top.
