2018 SANDAHL 'Dig it'
(rhine) riesling, solid ground grade, badacsony, hungary.

Label

From the 2018 vintage we have improved our market communication. One improvement is that we have divided our wine portfolio into three grades, informing to which quality level the wine belongs. The three levels are 'Rare peak', 'Mid range', and 'Solid ground' and these three grades are indicated by the back label and by different capsules.

This wine named 'Dig it' belongs to the 'Solid ground' level, which is our entry grade (below 'Rare peak' and 'Mid range' grade).

The theme for 2018 vintage was to identify a traffic sign useful in the illustration of the 'Solid ground' grade, in this case a sign warning for a road work digging into the solid ground. 'Solid ground' bottles are sealed with a screw cap with the Sandahl text in white, see picture to the right.

Weather

The 2018 autumn brought heavy rains between the 1st and 7th of September, causing some rot in lower parts of our vineyards, which didn't perfectly develop to botrytis. Then the autumn proceed like a farmers dream. There was an almost rain free sunny month from the 29th of September to the 27th of October.

We had three distinct harvest periods:
1. 'Normal harvest' period the 18th of September
2. 'Late harvest' period the 4th and 5th of October
3. 'Ultra late harvest' period the 15th and 17th of October

Origin

2018-09-18 Harvest of Genesis low in normal harvest period
2018-10-18 Use of 3rd fraction from pressing above harvest
2018-10-04 Harvest of Bishop garden in late harvest period
2018-10-04 Use of 1st and 2nd fraction from pressing above harvest

Some of the grapes in Bishop garden and Genesis low had gray rot and poor botrytis, but as usual we applied a strict selection at harvest.
