2016 SANDAHL 'CHICKEN YEAR'
(rhine) riesling, mid range grade, badacsony, hungary.

Labels

The 2016 label theme is traveling in Indochina. In this part of the world, 2016 was the year of the rooster. The rooster on the label is a modern feminist, and rather prefer to name it the Chicken Year.

Weather

In summer 2016, the maximum temperature were slightly over 30 degree only in few occasions, and the vines were not stressed by the heat. There were just enough rain showers to avoid the vines being stressed from drought.

For late harvesters, October 2016 was a real mess with cold weather and much rain. Consequently, the sugar growth in Riesling was moderate and the acidity got high and was preserved all the way to harvest in October

  Date 2019, in the summer
  Color Medium yellow.
Smell Quite strong smell of yellow fruit, ripe gooseberries, flowers and a hint of perfume. Still very nice and attractive in the smell.
Taste The wine gum has disappeared and is succeeded by apples and lemons in a stylish and powerful framing. Lovely balance between sugar, acidity and tannins, with a long powerful after-taste.
Judgment As expected, this wine has soften up to a rich mouth of wine and the consumption window has just opened.

By Christer Sandahl

Date 2017, in the summer, soon after bottling
  Color Light yellow.
Smell A bit shy smell, warm fruit and flowers, style and attraction.
Taste Yellow apples, some wine gum and raisins, stylish acidity and a strong after taste.
Judgment Still a bit hard and unyielding, but very promising, and needs a year to come around. Recalling the youthful character of 'count down' and 'Rake and Scope' when they were at this age.

OBSERVE:

Chicken Year is of mid range grade, but this is not indicated by the cork capsule.
